Hooray, Summer Solstice!

Hello sunny people!

I hope you are all sliding into summer sunscreened and hydrated! Here are some opportunities to unplug and play a bit.

Hope to see you soon,

💫

What’s ahead?

Free Arty Play!

I’m excited for this invitation to participate in the Harry Whitehorse International Wood Sculpture Festival.

I’ll be there Wednesday June 24th from 1-3pm.

Located at the gorgeous San Domiano Park, Monona.

We will create playful wood sculptures using scraps from the festival artists projects! (any age welcome)

Library Date Nights

Hey grown-ups, round up a partner and sign up for some Friday evening fun at the Pinney Studio. Your date could be your crush, your partner or pal, your parent or new friend, whoever! (One million bonus points if you bring your neighbor!) We will explore portraiture play, with special projects for you to take home. Little treats included. Caregivers, it’s ok to register yourself and your tween/teen as a date, 12+ only.  This event is designed and intended pairs to register together.

Fridays 6-7pm: June 26, July 24, Aug 21

Registration opens 2 weeks in advance: Library Art-Date Night with Artist-in-Residence Carrie Breunig | KODIAK - Madison Public Library

Live Model Sketching

All experience levels welcome for some lightly instructed live-model drawing time. The focus of this time is about connecting our eyes and our hands through observational practice. Our model will do some short poses to warm up and one longer pose (about 45min). Bring your sketchbook and your preferred medium if you’d like. Basic supplies will be available. Intended audience for this event is adults; teens 16+ welcome.

Saturdays 1-2:30: June 20, July 11, August 8.

Registration opens 2 weeks in advance: Live Model Sketching with Artist-in-Residence Carrie Breunig | KODIAK - Madison Public Library

Huge thank you to my neighbor Michelle for being our first model!

Pinney Library Open Art Studios!

Here’s the summer schedule!

  • Wednesdays: 6-8pm (except July 15)

  • Thursdays: 9-11am (except July 2, 16, and 30)

We’ve been doing lots of portraiture play and will continue! I’m having so much fun drawing and painting the lovely faces of Pinney. We are also building steam on our cardboard city, and the kids have been building lots of worlds using recyclable materials. (A kid recently made a bug house, because they are our neighbors too!)

Here’s a photo of some neighbors connecting last week. 💞

The Art of Neighborships | KODIAK - Madison Public Library

What I’ve been up to:

Olbrich Gardens Summer Breeze Block Party

I got to participate in two days of this super fun even, which was a glorious kick-off to summer. I loved coming up with this project for all ages. We made sun-streamers using thrifted and repurposed sheets, fabric paints, and liquid watercolors. I really appreciate how the people of Madison do not miss an opportunity to craft in a garden! We had over 250 visitors to our table and it was so delightful. Huge thanks to high school student and fellow artist, Rae. I think I would have tipped over without their help!

Pinny Library Residency

What a dream to get to hang out at the library and make art with people. Folks come to the studio with such open minds and interesting stories to tell!

I love the ways portraiture asks people to slow down and really see each other. Next up, I’m scheming up ways that we can play with transferring or printing our drawings to make repetitive patterns. Eventually, I would like to create some “Art of Neighborships” prints which people can customize and turn into personalized invitations. Something people can give to their neighbor down the hall or down the street, to finally invite them over for that cup of coffee or offer to help out with a child or pet. I’d love to hear your ideas about how to bring this neighborships idea out of the studio and into the world!

Above are some of my favorite drawings made by studio visitors, and below are some of my watercolor portraits of Pinney faces! Come sit for me! I’m really appreciating the practice.

And finally, just a friendly reminder that I plan to relaunch Kindling in the Eastmorland Community Center later this year! Check out this lovely recent post about the love baked into this project.

Did you know there will be two murals on the new buildings? One on the community center and one on the apartment building. Our dear and talented Amy Zaremba is creating the design, and Kindling will support to make sure the community has lots of opportunities to engage with the paintings! More on that later this summer!
